I have been referred to the School of Dentistry when will I be seen?

The average waiting time is 26 weeks or approximately 6 months.  You can ring the Belfast Royal Hospital and ask to speak to someone at the School of Dentistry to check on the progress of your referral.

Please be advised from your referral letter leaves the practice it usually takes around 2-3 weeks to reach the school of dentistry and to be processed onto their system.

This is due to the internal posting system at the hospital and the administration chaos at the School of Dentistry.  If you would like a copy of any correspondence we have sent to the School of Dentistry on your behalf and the dates on which these were sent please  contact us.

Is it safe to have your teeth whitened at a beauty salon?

NO! and it is also illegal for anybody other than a dentist to provide teeth whitening, and beauticians etc. risk prosecution providing these treatments.  Beauticians are not trained to diagnose decay, demineralised areas of enamel, gum recession, gum disease, acid erosion, or wear of the incisal edges of the teeth.  Whitening teeth with any of these conditions can cause problems and that is a massive problem! Beauticians are not regulated and if you encounter problems during or after the whitening treatment it is difficult to get a resolution.

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is classed as uncontrollable pain, swelling or bleeding and more commonly in children a knocked out tooth! So that means that lost crowns, chipped fillings, painless broken teeth, jagged edged are not emergencies but we will be glad to treat them as needing an urgent appointment but not an emergency appointment!
